💬What is Killer Chat?

Killer Chat! (often written Killer Chat or KC!) is a dark satire romance chatsim created by indie developer rosesrot. You play a reporter and aspiring crime novelist who has been asking one too many questions on the dark web — how to bury a body, how to swing a crowbar for blunt-force trauma, how to hide from law enforcement — all "for the book." Then a user named ERROR! UNKNOWN invites you to a private server with a warning: "don't be so obvious smh. You're Gonna Get Caught."

It is a serial killer chatroom. Now you have to pretend to be one of them so they don't kick you out — or kill you — while gathering first-hand research and, somehow, falling in love. The game was built in one month for the Spooktober Visual Novel Jam 2024, where it won Public Favorite and an Honorable Mention, and it has since become one of the highest-rated visual novels on itch.io.

Killer Chat has four romanceable serial killers across all genders. Each has a 2–3 hour route with its own voice-acted calls, CGs, and endings:

🎮How to Play

Almost everything in Killer Chat happens inside a fake messaging app. There is no map to explore — the game is about what you type, who you DM, and how long you can keep the lie alive over six in-game months:

  Build your MC — name, username, gender, personality, face, body, clothing, accessories, and what kind of fake serial killer you claim to be. The whole cast reacts to these choices.

• 2.

  Survive the group chat — read the server, pick your replies, and write your own status and bio. Say something that a real killer wouldn't and the others get suspicious.

• 3.

  Answer the DMs — once a killer takes an interest, you'll get private messages, friend requests, voice memos, and eventually fully voiced voice and video calls.

• 4.

  Commit to a route — your choices across the six months branch toward one of 8 unique endings. A happily-ever-after is possible. So is headlining the news as a lovesick corpse.

💡Tips for New Players

  Stay in character. The core tension is not being found out. Replies that sound like a nervous journalist rather than a murderer raise suspicion and can lock you out of the better endings.

  Budget 2–3 hours per route. The Original Edition is roughly 9–12 hours for all four routes. Save at the start of each in-game month so you can branch without replaying the whole thing.

  Turn your sound on. The voice calls and the custom soundtrack by Lorraine Wong are a huge part of why the game landed a 4.8/5 rating — and some dialogue only comes through audio.
