Backrooms - Play Free Online
Escape the infinite maze of yellow rooms, flickering fluorescent lights, and damp carpet โ before the entities find you.
๐ชWhat is the Backrooms?
The Backrooms is one of the internet's most enduring horror myths โ a place you reach by noclipping out of reality. No doors in, no obvious way out. Just the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow walls, the endless hum-buzz of fluorescent lights, and approximately 600 million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms stretching in every direction.
What began as a single 4chan image post in 2019 grew into a sprawling community wiki, a viral YouTube short by Kane Pixels, and multiple games. The browser version puts you directly into Level 0 with nothing but a flashlight and the need to find the exit โ before whatever lives in the dark corners finds you first.
๐บ๏ธThe Levels
Each level is a distinct environment with its own layout, atmosphere, and threats. You must find the exit of each level to progress โ and every level is harder than the last.
Level 0 โ "The Lobby" (Yellow Rooms)
The entry point for anyone who noclips from reality. Endless corridors of yellowed wallpaper, damp moist carpet, and fluorescent lights humming at maximum intensity. The layout is maze-like with no consistent logic โ rooms repeat, hallways loop back, and the disorientation is intentional. Find the ladder pieces, locate the escape key, and get out before the Bacteria patrolling the corridors corner you.
Level 1 โ "Habitable Zone" (Warehouse / Car Park)
A multi-story structure with machinery, fog, and standing water. The lighting is worse here โ darker sections mean Smilers lurk in the shadows. The greater threat is the Skin-Stealer, an entity that mimics the appearance of other players. If you're playing with others: keep talking so you know who's who. Silence from a teammate is a red flag.
Level 2 โ "Pipe Dreams" (Industrial Tunnels)
The darkest level in the browser game. Industrial tunnels, broken pipe infrastructure, and near-zero visibility. The audio design here is the most oppressive โ distant metallic banging, the sound of something moving through the pipes. Your flashlight battery becomes critical. Reach the exit before the power runs out.
Level 37 โ "The Poolrooms"
One of the most visually iconic Backrooms levels โ shallow pools of warm water under soft fluorescent light, an oddly peaceful aesthetic that masks a lethal environmental threat. Walk only through clear water to avoid the Hydrolitis Plague. Contaminated water is invisible until it's too late.
Level 94 โ Day/Night Survival
Features a full day-night cycle โ daytime is manageable, nighttime is when the threat level spikes. The level culminates in a boss encounter with the Animated King, requiring block-pushing puzzles to defeat. One of the most mechanically distinct levels in the game.
Secret Levels โ Beyond 55.1
Hidden levels including Overgrowth, The Grassrooms, and Level 92233 unlock through specific actions in earlier levels. These lead to alternate endings not available on the main path.
๐๏ธEntities โ What Hunts You
There are 12 hostile entities across the levels. Each has distinct behavior โ learning how to avoid or counter each one is the core survival skill of the game:
๐ Smilers
Found exclusively in darkness. You see them first by their glowing eyes. Shine your flashlight directly at them to keep them back โ they cannot advance into light. Never let your battery die near a dark room.
๐ง Skin-Stealers
Mimic the appearance of other players or wanderers. In co-op, they are the most psychologically disorienting threat. Keep verbal contact with teammates โ an imposter that doesn't respond correctly is a Skin-Stealer.
๐ Hounds
Dog-like creatures with human faces. Fast and aggressive once they detect you. Flashlight blinds them for a few seconds โ use that window to retreat, not fight. You cannot outrun them indefinitely.
๐ Partygoers
Tall yellow humanoids carrying red balloons, visibly bloodied on the mouth, hands, and legs. They respond to sound โ crouch and move slowly near them. Running or speaking loudly draws their attention instantly.
๐ฆ Bacteria
The primary threat of Level 0. Patrol the yellow corridors in irregular patterns. Learn their routes before committing to a path โ they do not chase unless triggered, but their patrol zones cover a lot of ground.
๐ Moths (Level 5)
Encountered in the Terror Hotel level. Unlike most entities, moths have a direct counter โ Bug Spray collected from the environment defeats them. Find the spray before entering their territory.
โ๏ธCore Mechanics
๐ฆ Flashlight
Your primary tool. Repels Smilers, stuns Hounds, reveals hidden objects. Battery management is a constant pressure โ find replacement batteries throughout each level.
๐ง Sanity
Prolonged time in the dark, near entities, or in certain zones drains your sanity. Health depletes when sanity reaches zero. Manage both meters simultaneously โ one tracks physical health, one tracks your mind.
๐ Sprint
A limited sprint is available for escape situations. Sprinting is loud โ noise-sensitive entities like Partygoers will respond. Only sprint when you have a clear path to distance.
๐ฅ Co-op (1โ4 Players)
Every team member must reach the exit alive. Proximity voice chat is active โ but entities can hear you too. Communication is vital and dangerous simultaneously.
๐กSurvival Tips
- 1.
Memorize the Level 0 layout methodically: The yellow rooms look identical. Pick a wall and follow it consistently โ the random-seeming layout has patterns once you stop panicking and start observing.
- 2.
Never run out of flashlight battery: Darkness is where Smilers live. Collect every battery you find โ do not save them, use them. Running blind in a Smiler-infested area is a death sentence.
- 3.
Move slowly near Partygoers: They are sound-triggered. Crouching and slow movement renders you nearly invisible to them. The moment you break into a run near one, the entire area becomes hostile.
- 4.
In co-op: talk constantly to catch Skin-Stealers: Establish a challenge word before you start. If a teammate can't confirm it, treat them as a Skin-Stealer until proven otherwise. They look exactly like your friends.
- 5.
In the Poolrooms, watch the water color: Clear water is safe. Any water with an unusual tint carries the Hydrolitis Plague. The visual difference is subtle โ slow down and look carefully before stepping through.
๐The Backrooms Lore
๐ธ The Original Image
The Backrooms mythology began with a single photograph posted to 4chan in 2019. The image showed an empty yellow office space โ no people, no windows, no exits. The caption described it as a place you reach by accidentally "noclipping out of reality." The concept spread across Reddit, wikis, and creepypasta forums, spawning an entire fictional cosmology of hundreds of levels.
๐ฌ Kane Pixels & the YouTube Revival
In 2022, filmmaker Kane Pixels released a found-footage short set in the Backrooms that went viral with tens of millions of views. His cinematic interpretation โ grainy VHS aesthetic, creature encounters, corporate horror undertones โ redefined how the public understood the myth and directly influenced the visual design of subsequent games.
๐ฎ Escape the Backrooms (Steam)
The most prominent Backrooms game is Escape the Backrooms, developed by Fancy Games and Blackbird Interactive, published by Secret Mode. It entered Early Access on Steam in August 2022 and reached full release in October 2025, accumulating over 44,000 reviews at approximately 90% positive. The full release surpassed 30,000 concurrent players within its first two days.

โFrequently Asked Questions
What does "noclipping into the Backrooms" mean?
"Noclipping" is a video game term for passing through solid walls. The Backrooms myth uses it metaphorically โ if you somehow "clip" through the geometry of reality itself, you end up in the Backrooms. There is no in-game explanation; you simply wake up there.
How many levels are in the game?
The browser version features 3 levels (0, 1, 2). The full Escape the Backrooms on Steam contains 30+ levels including secret levels accessible through hidden conditions beyond Level 55.1.
Can I play alone or do I need teammates?
The browser game is fully solo playable. Co-op is optional and adds the Skin-Stealer dynamic as an extra layer of tension. Solo play is more atmospheric; co-op is more strategically demanding.
Is the Poolrooms level dangerous?
Level 37 (The Poolrooms) is visually calming but contains the Hydrolitis Plague hidden in contaminated water. It is one of the most deceptive levels in the game โ the beauty of it is designed to lower your guard.
